Anglo Saxon: 5th Century to 1066. This period is also sometimes known as ‘the Dark Ages’ a term highlighting the relative scarcity of literary and cultural output from this time.Most Anglo Saxons wore some sort of metal adornment, buckles, brooches and clasps, artefacts are very distinctive in style, generally garish and bombastic and highly collectable. The term Anglo Saxon is a general term referring to the Germanic people or Saxons who set up regional kingdoms of Essex , Sussex and Wessex while the Angles controlled East Anglia, Mercia and Northumbria.In terms of religion the kingdoms followed paganism during the early period, but gradually converted to Christianity. During the 10th Century, the individual kingdoms unified under the rule of Wessex into the Kingdom of England,
